Care instructions
Hand-knotted wool rugs are built to last generations when cared for gently. Follow these guidelines to keep your StepnHang rug looking beautiful.
Everyday care
- Vacuum regularly with suction only — turn off or lift any beater bar / rotating brush so knots and pile are not pulled
- Vacuum in the direction of the pile (the smooth “nap” direction)
- Keep the nozzle off the fringe — fringe is structural warp; shake or brush it by hand instead
- Every 1–2 months, flip or fold back sections and vacuum the underside to remove grit that settles into the foundation
- Use a quality rug pad for grip, cushioning, and airflow underneath
- Rotate the rug 180° every 6 months so wear and sun exposure stay even
Spills & stains (act fast)
- Blot — never rub. Press a clean white cloth or paper towel to lift liquid; work from the outer edge toward the center
- For most spills, use cool water on a clean cloth. If needed, a tiny amount of mild bleach-free soap, then blot with clean water
- Do not soak the rug. Excess water can cause dye bleed, mildew, or foundation damage
- Dry thoroughly with airflow (fan on low). Brush the pile lightly once dry to restore the nap
- Solid spills (mud, food): let dry, gently scrape, then vacuum and spot-clean
Washing & deep cleaning
- Do not machine-wash, steam-clean, dry-clean, or use hot-water carpet extractors made for wall-to-wall synthetic carpet
- Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach, ammonia, or dry-cleaning solvents on wool
- Plan a professional hand-wash by a rug specialist about every 3–5 years (sooner for high-traffic areas, pets, or stubborn stains)
- Choose cleaners who dust/beat the rug first, test dyes, fully rinse, and dry flat in controlled conditions
Do
- Protect from long, direct sunlight (sheers, rotate, or UV film) to limit fading and fiber drying
- Lift furniture occasionally and use protectors so legs do not crush the pile
- Store clean, rolled (not folded), in a dry place with moth protection if storing long-term
Don’t
- Don’t place potted plants directly on the rug — leaks cause stains and rot
- Don’t shake the rug aggressively outdoors in a way that stresses the foundation
- Don’t iron, steam, or apply high heat to wool pile or fringe
- Don’t ignore moth signs — inspect the back and edges periodically, especially in dark storage
For difficult stains or repairs (fringe, edges, holes), contact a professional rug cleaner or email support@stepnhang.com.

Rug Questions? Let’s Clear the Floor
What is a Hand-knotted Rug?
A hand-knotted rug is individually crafted by skilled artisans who tie thousands of knots by hand on a loom. This traditional process creates a highly durable, unique rug that can last for generations.
What is a Kilim?
A Kilim is a flat-woven rug made without a pile. It is lightweight, reversible, and known for its geometric patterns and vibrant colors. Kilims are ideal for layering, casual spaces, and high-traffic areas.
What is the difference between hand-knotted and machine-made rugs?
Hand-knotted rugs are crafted entirely by hand and can last decades or even generations. Machine-made rugs are produced by automated looms, making them less durable and generally less valuable over time.
Why are hand-knotted rugs more expensive?
Each rug can take months to complete, depending on its size and knot density. The cost reflects the artisan's craftsmanship, premium natural materials, and the time invested in creating each piece.
How long does a hand-knotted rug last?
With proper care, a quality hand-knotted wool rug can last 50–100 years or longer, making it a true heirloom piece.
Are hand-knotted rugs worth the investment?
Yes. Hand-knotted rugs retain their beauty and functionality for decades, often increasing in character and value over time. Many families pass them down through generations.
What materials are used in your rugs?
Our rugs are primarily made from natural wool, cotton, and occasionally silk. These materials are durable, sustainable, and naturally beautiful.
Are hand-knotted rugs pet-friendly?
Yes. Wool rugs are naturally resilient, stain-resistant, and durable enough for homes with pets. Prompt cleaning of accidents is recommended to maintain their beauty.
Are all handmade rugs the same?
No. Hand-knotted, hand-tufted, hand-woven, and Kilim rugs are all handmade but differ significantly in construction, durability, and value. Hand-knotted rugs are considered the highest-quality handmade rugs.
Will my handmade rug have slight imperfections?
Yes. Minor variations in color, size, or pattern are natural characteristics of handmade rugs and are part of their authenticity and charm
Can I use a hand-knotted rug in high-traffic areas?
Yes. Hand-knotted wool rugs are among the most durable flooring options and perform exceptionally well in living rooms, hallways, and dining areas.
How do I clean my hand-knotted rug?
Vacuum regularly using suction only and avoid beater bars. For spills, blot immediately with a clean cloth. Professional cleaning every few years helps maintain its condition
Do you offer custom sizes and designs?
Yes. We can create custom hand-knotted rugs and Kilims tailored to your preferred size, color palette, and design requirements.
How long does it take to make a custom rug?
Production time varies depending on size and complexity, but most custom hand-knotted rugs require several weeks to several months due to the handcrafted process.
Is every rug unique?
Yes. Because each rug is handmade, no two pieces are exactly alike. Every rug carries the signature of the artisan who created it.
Are hand-knotted rugs environmentally friendly?
Yes. Hand-knotted rugs are typically made from natural, renewable fibers and crafted using traditional low-energy production methods.
Do handmade rugs increase in value?
Fine-quality handmade rugs can retain value exceptionally well and, in some cases, appreciate over time, particularly collectible and artisan-crafted pieces.
